Like Virginia, California is currently updating its Math Framework. Many of CA's proposed math reforms are controversial and have sparked public outcry. Some of the same contentious issues are likely to surface as Virginia embarks on its 2023 Math SOL (Standards of Learning) revision.

Math reform is a hot topic across the US, with California revising its Math Framework and Virginia updating its Math SOLs. Despite initial claims of success, San Francisco’s math reforms appear to have led to unintended consequences.

This is the first in a series of articles looking at the national debate on math instruction and its potential impact on Virginia and APS. The below is designed to kick-off the series by providing some background information for parents. It is important to note that different approaches may be better suited for different subject areas; we are currently seeing this play out in APS.
