FAQs
Why can't I deduct my donation to APE?
"501(c)(4) contributions are not tax deductible. One big difference between 501(c)(3) public charities and 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations is that contributions to 501(c)(3)s can be tax deductible, while contributions to 501(c)(4)s are never deductible." Read more here and why we are a 501(c)4 below.
Why is APE a 501(c)(4) and not a 501(c)(3)?
501(c)(4) status allows us the option to endorse a candidate for Arlington School Board, which we may do from time to time. 501(c)(3)organizations "are flatly prohibited from intervening in political campaigns in any manner whatsoever." Read more here.
Who funds APE?
We are lucky to have parents and community members donate to our group. 100% of our donations have been from local moms and dads.
Will you list your donors’ names?
No, we will not sell nor share their personal information without permission. Read more here about Donor Privacy Policy Guidelines. "Protecting donor privacy is a key part of protecting philanthropic freedom. Without the right to give anonymously if so desired, donors are less likely to support the causes and communities they care about." Read more here on the importance of protecting donor privacy. .
You seem to have a lot of content on your website and newsletter, and fancy graphics on your social media, who did you hire to do all this?
Well, thank you! We are fortunate to have parent volunteers who volunteer to write, edit and design all our content. We do not have any paid staff.
What do you use your money on?
Website hosting, research through FOIAs and the occasional subscription to fancy Zoom so we can host big events like our annual meeting and our candidate forum. And the occasional marketing item like event signs, stationery or business cards.
What's the biggest single donation you've received?
$500 - from a parent who was generous enough to match funds raised at our fall social. Our average donation thus far is $95.
How much money do you have?
Not a lot! We even had to change banks recently because our balance was so low we were losing money on fees. We will always strive to do a lot with what is donated and be good stewards of our donors' trust and funds.
