The Advisory Council on Teaching & Learning (ACTL), Budget Advisory Committee (BAC), and Advisory Council on School Facilities and Capital Programs (FAC) presented annual reports.
Summary of the 5/25/23 School Board Meeting
Topics included the Social Emotional and Learning & Wellness Monitoring Report; a vote on the The Heights Building Phase 2 Construction Contract Award; policy revisions; and Long Range Planning – Facility Evaluation Assessment Contract.

Topics included the Draft School Year Calendar Policy, adoption of the Fiscal Year 2024 School Board Budget totaling $804,392,800. The Heights Building Phase 2 Construction Contract received an additional $4,500,000 over the previously approved amount.

Superintendent’s Updates included Substance Abuse use Education and Prevention in APS to address substance and opioid abuse. There was also an update presentation on English Language Arts Literacy.

As part of APS’ ongoing efforts to expand availability of Narcan in schools, Dr. Durán announced that APS hopes to allow students to safely carry Narcan in schools by May 26, 2023.
APS is seeking steering committee members for the 2024 – 2030 APS Strategic Plan Steering Committee. The application window is April 14 – May 4, 2023.
The Office of Special Education is continuing to work to provide the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) to Students with Disabilities (SWD) and is looking at different ways to improve performance. APS’ overall strategic goal by 2024 is to have at least 80% of SWD spending 80% or more of their school day in a general education setting. The current metric as of 2020-21 is 64.5%.

Arlington Education Association (AEA) filed a request seeking certification to be the exclusive representative for licensed personnel and support personnel.
New Content Filter being installed on APS Devices
Chair Goldstein commented that the Board is still working through a lot of issues. In the past, the School Board’s Proposed Budget is usually a good indicator of what the final budget will be, but that may not be the case this year.

Topics discussed include a monitoring report on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and a presentation of the Special Education Annual Plan.
Summary of the 3/2/23 School Board Meeting
Top 3 topics at this meeting include: 1) Summer School planning is underway with an increase in capacity; 2) The Proposed FY 2024 Budget includes nothing on smaller class sizes; 3) The Office of English Learners (OEL) presented a draft Five-Year Plan with an initial comment period that ends March 7 that led to several questions from the Board.
